UPDATE: When asked for clarification regarding the January 25 Worlds Collide event on Royal Rumble weekend and what it could mean for NXT, a WWE rep told Wrestlezone:
“That event will be Worlds Collide. The schedule of the 2020 NXT TakeOver events will be out in the near future.”
WWE has put up presale details for Royal Rumble VIP travel packages, and they include an interesting tidbit. Over the past number of years, each major WWE PPV has also featured an NXT TakeOver event. With NXT moving to a two-hour show in a place of direct competition with All Elite Wrestling, it seems that those plans are no longer set in stone. For the January 2020 event, there is a Worlds Collide event advertised in place of NXT TakeOver.
For those unfamiliar, WWE has promoted several Worlds Collide specials in the past. These were shows taped during Fan Axxess events featuring superstars from across all of WWE’s various brands. These specials were relatively underpromoted, although several matches have become notable in hindsight. Particularly, Luke Harper’s contest with Dominik Dijakovic at the first event this past April. Vince’s personal dislike of the match has been cited as a reason why Harper has remained on the company shelf for most of this year.
The schedule also does not offer tickets for RAW and SmackDown, meaning that WWE could be reconsidering its policy of running full-scale days-long events for major shows as they have for WrestleMania for years. With NXT premiering on USA in just over a week, we’ll surely be seeing lots of changes to WWE as they try to adapt to a shifting wrestling landscape.
