Christian Talks Learning An Important Lesson From Steve Austin

Christian recently joined SiriusXM’s Busted Open radio, where he discussed his career and learning a very important lesson from Steve Austin. According to Christian, he always tried to be great at everything, as he realized early on in his wrestling career that he wasn’t going to be the greatest superstar at one particular thing.

“For me, early on in my career, I realized right away. I think I was smart enough to realize what I was, and that I was never gonna be the biggest guy, I was never gonna be the strongest guy, I was never gonna be the fastest guy,” he said. “So instead of focusing and trying to be great at one thing, I wanted to be good at everything. It’s funny, if I look back at tape of myself now when I first started with WWE, I was like ‘Man, how did I get a job?’ You know, I just wasn’t that good, it seemed like I was out there trying to put 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag, just trying to do things. The actual lightbulb moment for me was when I went singles, and I was doing a live event somewhere in Nebraska, I think. I can’t remember who I was working with, but I asked Steve Austin to watch my match.”

Christian went on to describe how when he came back from the match, Austin wasn’t giving him the praise he thought he’d get. “I came back, I sought out Steve, I was like ‘Hey, what did you think?,’ he turns around and looks at me dead in the eyes and says ‘Why don’t you learn how to effin’ sell?’, and I was like wow, like..what?” he said. Christian then went on to say that this occurred sometime in 2001, as he was trying to train himself to be a singles wrestler.

He went on to say that he watched some of the tape and learned that Austin was right, and he wasn’t doing the best he could. “I had to fix that part of my game, and I realized that to get to a different level, you have to let the audience in, and the best way to do that is to have the ability to sell.”
