Awesome Kong (Kia Stevens) recently spoke with Wrestlezone’s Bill Pritchard ahead of the GLOW season three premiere on Netflix. Stevens is back as Tammé Dawson, aka “Welfare Queen” and she’s also splitting her time in All Elite Wrestling. Stevens talked about what it’s like playing dual roles like this, with Tammé being so upbeat and fun compared to her quiet and imposing wrestling character.
“There are times where I’m not really as, I’ll say fun and flirty, on the red carpet or just in public or even on social media. It’s like people [will say] ‘Well you’re so different!’ and it’s as if I ruin Kong for them, if that makes sense. And I hate to ruin Kong for people, so it’s a balance I haven’t quite mastered yet. How to both be Kia Stevens in the outside world and to maintain that image of Kong.”
Brandi Rhodes touted Kong as her “insurance policy” and called her a good friend, noting she could show up whenever she is needed or when Kong wants to. Expanding on that, Stevens said fans can expect to see her in All Elite Wrestling as long as she’s “not fulfilling any prior obligations,” adding that she “will be breaking my neck to come down there.”

Stevens talked about the positive vibes in the AEW locker room, noting that the open collaborative effort lets talent suggest things and feel comfortable doing it.
“So it really is a collaborative effort, because we all just want to give the people watching and even ourselves and each other things we haven’t seen before and chances to pop and to cheer and go ‘wow’. Because it’s so easy to go cynical when you’ve been in wrestling for so long, and we’re trying to break that down in a lot of people and have them enjoy it again.”
Stevens added to that, saying she can’t wait for people to get what they want in wrestling and “turn into kids again” with AEW. For GLOW, she says she hopes people can learn more about the entertainment industry in general and what it means to finally get what you want, if it’s what you want.
