SmackDown Live delivered a solid show last night and one of the highlights was when Roman Reigns fought Buddy Murphy. While many thought it would be a squash match, the two went back-and-forth in a great bout. One big fan of this was SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio co-host Bully Ray. He explained that this match did a ton for Murphy going forward.
“A long time ago, [Gerald] Brisco taught me a very important lesson,” said Ray. “He told me, ‘Bubba, if you don’t make anyone, you didn’t beat anyone.’ Last night Roman Reigns made Buddy Murphy. When you hear the 1-2-3, those people popped as if Roman Reigns just beat somebody much higher on the card than a Buddy Murphy. Going into that match, we’ve only seen Buddy Murphy in the ring for 205 Live. Why would that even have been a match? You would think Roman Reigns would just destroy him in front of three minutes, you might be even thinking squash match. That’s the last thing it was because Roman knows and WWE knew in that moment that if you don’t make Buddy then you don’t beat Buddy. He gave himself to Buddy Murphy and he allowed Murphy to shine. In turn, Buddy Murphy played his part extremely well. They had an awesome match, I loved it. There was nothing crazy … it was just a good pro wrestling match with two guys you had an emotional investment in. Overnight, Buddy Murphy can step into the ring with a modicum of credibility because he was able to hang with Roman Reigns. Not only was he able to hang, he got some credible false finishes against Roman and kicked out of a Superman Punch. Did you see the look on Roman Reigns’ face when he kicked out? [He was like,] ‘Who the hell is this guy? This is a 205 Live kid and he just kicked out of a Roman Reigns Superman Punch? Who the hell is this guy?’
In a potential Match of the Year on #SDLive last night, the wrestling world learned the name @WWE_Murphy.
