Paul Heyman on General Managers Being ‘Played Out,’ Long-Term Storytelling

Inside The Ropes recently uploaded a clip from their live event with Paul Heyman. With the mad genius of ECW recently taking the reigns of Monday Night RAW as a creative lead, his words are telling in how he may look to tell stories going forward.

For one, Heyman is very much against the role of general managers, which he says has been “played out” over the past 20 years. “I don’t know how many people tune into WWE or any form of sports entertainment to see how a match is made. The show has become too much of ‘Here’s the story behind the show that you’re watching’ and I think sometimes people just want to see the show.” He espouses a focus on character development rather than contracts and corporate structure, saying that he’d rather present simple situations that fans can get behind.

As for his writing style, Heyman said that he likes to focus on the long-term. “I want to know where I’m going. I’ve never written the first page of a story and then figured it out along the way. I always write the end first. It’s just my training and it’s just the way that I see things. Here’s the finish. Here’s what we’re going to do at next year’s WrestleMania. Here’s how we close WrestleMania. Now here’s how we get there.”
