Awesome Kong On Jim Ross Telling Her She Wouldn’t Make It In Wrestling Because Of Her Size

Update: Ross responded to this post to clarify that he didn’t say Kong wouldn’t make it in wrestling, but rather that she didn’t fit the WWE ‘Diva’ mold. Ross posted the following on Twitter:

“I never said Kia wouldn’t make it as a wrestler.

This was at the Diva Search and I was honest that at that time she was unlikely “Diva Material.”

I love her work. Listen to #DoubleOrNothing @AEWrestling”

“GLOW” star Awesome Kong recently spoke at Netflix’s Scene Stealers panel to promote the show. During the panel, Kong discussed her professional wrestling career, and her time in Tough Enough. Kong revealed that WWE Hall Of Famer and former WWE commentator Jim Ross, now with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), once told her she wouldn’t make it in professional wrestling due to her size.

Here’s what she had to say:

“I went on a show called Tough Enough, it was to have a WWE contract, and Jim Ross, who was an announcer there, told me I’d never make it in wrestling because of my size, and that gave me the fire to be like, ‘Watch this.’ So a friend of mine got me on a show, Discovery Body Challenge—there’s all these weight loss shows, but [it was] ten years ago on Discovery Health—and they actually introduced me to a Dojo—Inoki Dojo—in Los Angeles where Chyna was training. She did a surprise segment for me, and that Dojo invited me to go to Japan. I had only planned to go there for two weeks, and it turned into six years.”
