Vince McMahon Considered ‘Crazy’ A Dirty Word & His Policy With An AJ Lee Storyline

Former WWE writer “Wrestling” Matt McCarthy (along with “The Wrestling Encyclopedia” Vince Averill) hosts the We Watch Wrestling podcast (subscribe here) and McCarthy had an interesting tidbit to share about when Vince McMahon ran the storyline about AJ Lee (Brooks) being the “crazy ex-girlfriend” during 2011 & 2012. This is from the duo’s latest episode, “Issue #294”:

I was there when AJ was “crazy” and legit – and this was obviously before the TV show, the hit runaway musical comedy hit, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, but that was her whole gimmick at the time. She was the crazy ex-girlfriend. Do you remember all this? But the goddamn thing with Vince was, “We can’t call her crazy.” That was a big no-no. Can’t use the word “crazy.” So if you go back and watch those tapes, they call her “unstable.” Just like Dean Ambrose.

Talk about turning a negative into a positive, AJ Lee turned the term into the name of her memoirs, Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules which was released in April of 2017.
