Figure Friday: WWE Retros Series 9 (Photos)

It’s Figure Friday and this week we take a look at the new Mattel WWE Retros Series 9 figures currently available on RingsideCollectibles.com. This series includes:

• Goldust
• Randy Orton
• Macho Man Randy Savage
• Samoa Joe

If you ever collected the WWE Hasbro figures from the 90s these go along well with them as they’re Mattel’s version. They’re the same size as well, which allows you to fill in gaps in your old collection with guys whom were never made, such as Goldust, in this set. That being said let’s take a look at them up close!

The Packaging

The packaging on these are great as they look very similar to the cards on the 90s Hasbro figures. Each package has an action shot of the wrestler whose figure it is and each figure comes with a QR code you scan to play as them in the WWE Mayhem app game that coincides with these figures. The back of the box shows more on the app as well as the action sequences of the specific figure plus whom all is in the set.

Goldust

Goldust was my most sought after in the set as I’ve been a fan of his since I was a kid and love collecting anything of him. Not to mention it’s his old school attire, which makes him such a great addition to the Habro/Retro collection! His wig is removable, which is a great addition, too. They also gave him his chubbier head scan with the goofy look on his face as he used to do.

The figure features a clothesline-type sequence where you pull his arm back/turn his waist and he swings forward to clothesline. The detail on him is pretty good, too, for a Retro as these do lack some details due to the budget restrictions. Overall, I think it’s a great addition to the Retro line and I highly recommend picking him up if you’re a fan or simply want him in your Legends collection.

Randy Orton

Randy Orton is a pretty cool Retro, although he shares the same action sequence as Goldust with the clothesline feature. It’s not his latest head scan, but his more recent shaved head one. It’s not my favorite scan of his but that’s clearly the version of Orton they based it on. He has the “Orton” text on his trunks but lacks the other designs, but he does have a lot of his arm tattoos and wrist/hand tape at least. Not to mention he has his black boots and knee pads.

Overall, it’s a pretty good figure. Not my favorite version of Orton as I really like his latest head scan, but it’s not bad if you’re a fan of his. There’s not much else they could really do with him anyway so it’s pretty accurate and you could always swap the head if you want.

Macho Man Randy Savage

This Macho is pretty cool and it’s already his second Retro figure, which is interesting. Mattel likes to make a lot of Macho Man figures if you couldn’t tell as they were so excited to get the rights to him after Jakks never could acquire them. I’m personally not a big fan of this scan as I’m not sure it really looks like him, but besides that it’s cool the shades are molded to his face as well as his bandana. He features his green trunks with the stars on it as well as his hand tape on both hands. He also features the clothesline action sequence, which is interesting since three of the four in this set do the same thing.

Overall, it’s not a bad figure. At least it’s an old school version compared to his later nWo one they recently released as well. I think the scan could be a bit better but besides that it’s nice for any Macho Man fan.

Samoa Joe

Lastly we have Samoa Joe’s very first Retro figure and they used the Kevin Owens mold, which works pretty well for Joe. That’s why Joe has a shirt on as Mattel likes to reuse the bodies if you couldn’t tell by the other three in this set. I would’ve preferred Joe without his shirt for in-ring attire of course but I understand why they did what they did. Besides that I think it’s a pretty good figure. He has his multi-colored shorts as well as t-shirt and hand tape. He features a senton type action as they like to call it, basically you pull him back and his waist bends backwards then he swings forward. At least it’s different than the others in the set.

Overall, it’s a pretty good figure of Joe. Based on the body types they have already it makes the most sense why they went with a shirt-covered version. If you’re a fan of Joe then be sure to pick him up. I really like his packaging as well as it’s very vibrant compared to the others.

Overall

I think this is a pretty good set. I like all four figures and honestly the last set, Series 8, was pretty good, too. The Goldust is my favorite as I think he looks best plus he has the removable wig accessory.
