Report: Conor McGregor Being Investigated For Sexual Assault Allegation In Ireland

Just hours after announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA), Conor McGregor is now dealing with sexual assault allegations. The New York Times reports that McGregor is being investigated in Ireland after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in December. As of this writing, the former UFC champion has not been charged with a crime.

The report reads, “Following the usual protocol in criminal investigations in Ireland and much of Europe, where a formal charge does not necessarily follow an arrest, McGregor was arrested in January, questioned by law enforcement authorities and released pending further investigation.”

McGregor’s lawyer in Dublin did not respond to The New York Times seeking comment on the matter. The woman accusing McGregor claims the incident occurred at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin. McGregor is reportedly a frequent guest at the establishment, oftentimes booking its sole penthouse room. His last and most recent visit occurred in December, which is when the alleged attack took place.

Irish media have been reporting on the matter since last year, however, as per Irish law, they are unable to name McGregor specifically as he has not been officially convicted for rape. A spokesman for Ireland’s police was also unable to confirm if McGregor was the man under investigation. All that’s being said is the accused is an “unnamed sportsman.”

The spokesman confirmed the suspect was arrested on January 17 and released without charge while the investigation continues. The NYT report notes that anonymous people with knowledge of the hotel’s operations confirmed that McGregor visited the night before police say the alleged attack took place. Police have also obtained evidence from McGregor’s hotel room as well as closed-circuit camera footage.

Obviously, the situation doesn’t look good for McGregor, who was recently arrested in Miami for smashing a fan’s phone outside a club. He was also arrested last April in New York for tossing a dolly through a fighter bus window.
