Joey Ryan was a guest on the Total Engagement w/ Matt Koon podcast and opened up about his pro wrestling career, what it’s like being known as ‘the penis guy,’ whether he would consider All Elite Wrestling as a potential full time landing spot and much more. Highlights appear below.
On Whether He Would Consider Signing An Exclusive Deal:
The cliche thing is never say never. I am currently under contract with Lucha Underground, but that’s not an exclusive deal. Obviously, I can still keep my independent bookings. It’s weird because I think about Lucha Underground, or even MLW, which I’ve been on, or Championship Wrestling From Hollywood, these TV shows—obviously when stuff is shot for TV the penis stuff is a little too outside the box, so, at times, I think about, ‘It would be nice to have a steady paycheck. It would be nice to go somewhere where I don’t have to hustle for my own bookings, or I don’t have to agent for my own travel.’ I also think about my audience that I’ve built, and the fact that I’m not struggling for work, and I am doing fine. Would it be almost irresponsible of me to give up this market that I’ve cornered for myself, to go somewhere where I’m not allowed to do these creative stunts where I’ve kept my passion going and kept my audience growing? It is something to think about. Until an offer is put down on the table where I actually have to sit down and think about it and weigh the pros and cons, I don’t really know which way I would lean, but there’s a lot of things to think about.
Joey Ryan On AEW As A Potential Landing Spot:
Having a close relationship with Cody and The Young Bucks is definitely something that would weigh in the pro’s side of pros and cons, but again I’ve strived so well, and thrives so well just being able to roll with the punches, and I know the long term goal of All Elite is episodic television, which you’re definitely going to need writers because you’re going to have to have storylines that pay off. You can’t just have chaos all the time. ECW lasted a little while with kind of just having chaos, but it wasn’t exactly that marketable outside the hardcore wrestling audience, so it’s hard to say. I don’t know if the character of Joey Ryan fits in the context of walls and regulations, but again, with those guys being my friends and me having full trust in them, if they had an idea for me, if they had something in mind for me, I might lean toward trusting their opinion.
