Aleister Black made his debut in NXT in 2017 and was on an absolute tear, destroying every opponent in his path with a swift but brutal kick known as The Black Mass. He was by far the fastest rising star in WWE and many already dubbed him as “the next big thing” before even making his transition to the main roster.
He was undefeated and was yet to be pinned, but Gargano would end the latter streak. In a Fatal-4-Way match at the end of 2017 to crown a new number one contender for the NXT Championship, The Undisputed Era would assault Black and give Gargano an opportunity to become the first person to pin Aleister Black, becoming number one contender in the process.
