Johnny Gargano has gotten immense support from the NXT Universe, becoming a fan favorite over the course of his run. His feud with Ciampa saw him become universally cheered while Ciampa got universally booed. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Gargano revealed why he’s considered the last true babyface in pro-wrestling (H/T Cageside Seats)
That’s the thing too, people are so afraid to be human beings in this day and age, especially in wrestling. They think you need to be this really tough, angry person at all times. That’s not real – I’m a real dude. I think that’s a big reason why a lot of people say that I’m the last true babyface in the world.
He went on to say that because of how real his character his, it makes it easier for the NXT audience to get behind him as they see a bit of themselves in him. That’s undoubtedly the mark of a great babyface.
