Charlotte Flair recaptured the SmackDown Women’s Championship after facing Carmella and Becky in a triple threat match. The story implied that Charlotte stole Becky’s thunder as she was essentially a last-minute addition to the match.
Up till that point, Becky Lynch had been on a roll, having the best win streak on SmackDown Live, male or female. She earned her way to a title shot only to have her momentum stolen by Charlotte the minute she returned. Understandably frustrated, she attacked Charlotte after her SummerSlam title victory to a huge pop. While the attack was intended to position her as a heel, what happened was the complete opposite. Fans grew to love Becky more and despise Charlotte more, relating to the Irish Lass Kicker‘s frustrations.
It added an edge to Becky’s character that had never been seen before and made her the biggest topic of discussion in WWE.
