The first-ever Hell in a Cell match took place at Badd Blood 1997 and happened between two WWE legends in Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. As with their matches later on, it turned out to be an immortal one, justifying WWE’s decision of putting the two men up against each other for the first match.
It really set the standard for Hell in a Cell and over the years, the gargantuan steel structure has become one of WWE’s signature stipulation matches. It eventually turned into a PPV in its own right and for the last decade, WWE has centered the entire PPV name on the stipulation alone. There have been roughly 40 Hell in a Cell matches throughout history, many of which have been instant classics, while some didn’t deliver as hoped.
