Steve Austin took on and defeated Jake “The Snake” Roberts in the tournament finals. Roberts was a born-again Christian and had used the religion during his promos and for his character work. Austin, wanting to make the character suffer for his own gain on-screen, smartly decided to use the idea of “Austin 3:16” to counter “John 3:16”.
Nobody knew that the line he used would end up being one of WWE’s biggest merchandise sellers of all time and that it would shoot Austin up the stratosphere.
