Steve Austin is one of the biggest babyfaces in WWE history and has drawn the most money as one as well. Being the anti-hero, Austin stood against the authority and made his name out of feuding against Mr. McMahon and the corporation. Fans always viewed him as the antithesis of the American corporate life, which is what won millions over in the first place.
So when he turned heel at WrestleMania X7 and aligned with Mr. McMahon, people were quick to realize it was a mistake, including Austin himself. He simply wasn’t getting booed and when he didn’t, resorted to comedy to be an entertaining heel. In late 2001, he quickly turned babyface again.
