Although the creative decision was understandably criticized in retrospect, the closing shot of WrestleMania X7 where Mr. McMahon and Steve Austin were shaking hands remains one of the most shocking and iconic WrestleMania moments to this day. Austin himself admitted regret in the angle, but there is no denying that at the time, it caused a lot of shockwaves.
From a storyline perspective, Austin was essentially the final jewel for Mr. McMahon – the one superstar that he went after who never sided with him. It did result in Austin becoming more of a comedy character down the line, but it was still an interesting and great moment in itself.
