Batista was the unfortunate victim of other circumstances affecting his run in 2014. That other circumstance was none other than the fact that WWE fans wanted to see Daniel Bryan on top and only Daniel Bryan. When Batista returned and won the Royal Rumble 2014, he was rejected right away, with fans surprisingly chanting for The Shield’s Roman Reigns (who was a heel at the time).
Batista was furious about it and even showed the finger to a member of the audience. The next PPV he wrestled at was Elimination Chamber and fans would uncharacteristically cheer for Alberto Del Rio while booing everything that Batista did. He would turn heel soon after.
Luckily, he redeemed this run in 2019 and got to have a storybook farewell to his career at WrestleMania 35.
