A lot of great things have been said about Hiroshi Tanahashi. As of January 4th, 2016, he handed over the proverbial torch to Kazuchika Okada, cementing the latter as the Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling. While it wasn’t any surprise, especially given that Okada was being primed for the spot anyway, one mustn’t forget the years that Tanahashi has put in for New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Okada proved to be the most worthy successor as he continues to lead NJPW to new heights, but for those who only started watching post-2016 or so, they may not be aware of Tanahashi’s true importance to the company. He was the go-to man for the company for years and with a record 8 IWGP title reigns have truly established himself as a living legend.
He’s even gotten comparisons to John Cena, jokingly being called “Cena-hashi”. But those who followed him know that he’s on a level of his own (as is Cena). Tanahashi is truly a once-in-a-lifetime talent as they claim and here are a few reasons why.
