Everyone knows this story, but many don’t realize the impact it had on the wrestling industry. Due to Madusa trashing the WWF Women’s Championship on Nitro a couple of years prior, McMahon couldn’t stand the thought of Bret Hart doing the same with the biggest title in the company.
With Hart finishing up his WWF contract, he was set to face Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series in Canada. Not wanting to lose in front of his home country crowd, he refused to drop the title, agreeing to a DQ finish while dropping the title the following night.
You know what happened next and it led to the creation of the Mr. McMahon character. He would be the #1 heel throughout the Attitude Era and become responsible for the rise of stars like Steve Austin and The Rock. It was controversial, but it was a game changer.
