It would be wrong to say that Kofi Kingston wasn’t successful before 2019. Even on an individual level, he won several accolades. As a tag team wrestler, he holds the record of being the longest-reigning tag team champion in WWE history, with Kingston having held the title with multiple different partners throughout his career.
However, the WWE Championship was one title that constantly eluded him and many fans felt he was always deserving of it. Unfortunately, McMahon didn’t see it that way – up until February 2019 when Kingston stole the show with a one-hour performance in a Gauntlet match as well as an incredible showing at the Elimination Chamber.
Those two performances convinced him that Kofi Kingston’s time had come and he inserted him into the WWE title match at WrestleMania. With his popularity and stock higher than ever, Kingston would ride his wave of momentum to become the first-ever WWE Champion of African descent.
