#5.) Sycho Sid
Between late 1996 and early 1997, Shawn Michaels‘ popularity began to dwindle, as fans weren’t fully buying him as a babyface. Despite being a heel, Sycho Sid found quite a bit of popularity among fans (similar to how he was cheered over Hulk Hogan in 1992) and at Madison Square Garden, it felt like the roles were entirely reversed.
Sid defeated Michaels to become WWF Champion, before losing it back to Michaels in his hometown of San Antonio at the Alamodome. Michaels vacated the title after “losing his smile” and Sid would become champion again heading into WrestleMania 13. The only problem with both reigns was that fans didn’t fully buy into Sid, who clearly had a lesser workrate as compared to Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.
