There wasn’t going to be any other option, was there? This was the match that made CM Punk a breakout star of the highest-caliber and it all began with the infamous pipebomb. Despite Punk being a heel, the story made him look like the anti-authority babyface, opposed to John Cena who was the living embodiment of corporate WWE.
It also happened to be at his hometown of Chicago and the crowd was so wild that if Punk hadn’t won, you’d imagine that Cena would have been in legitimate danger. From the reaction of the crowd, to the fact that CM Punk’s WWE contract was actually set to expire, the story brought about a big mix between reality and fiction.
The difference was that Punk knew perfectly where to draw the line. The match itself was one of the best in WWE history and CM Punk had one of the most unforgettable nights as he ran out with the WWE Championship after defeating Cena.
