#3.) The DDT was invented by mistake!
It’s incredible to think that the DDT, one of the most commonly used wrestling moves today, was invented by accident. There was a time when the DDT was the most feared move in wrestling. Roberts once legitimately knocked out Ricky Steamboat cold after hitting a DDT on the concrete floor (Not a wise idea by the great Steamboat).
It was also one of the most protected finishers at the time, but the origin story is quite fascinating. Roberts faced a masked wrestler in the mid-80s known as “The Grappler”. When he had The Grappler’s head locked, he was being pushed away and shoved to a corner. The Grappler stepped on Roberts’ foot and Roberts would accidentally fall on his back, spiking The Grappler on his head and knocking him out cold. This was where he stumbled upon (literally) the idea of using it as a finisher.
