Rusev was embroiled in a heated feud with Roman Reigns, who had already beaten him once on the RAW before SummerSlam. Their rivalry got so heated that they brawled instead of having an actual match at SummerSlam that year. Nonetheless, Rusev was “defending the honor of his wife” Lana, yet portrayed as the bad guy. He would finally put the United States title on the line against Reigns at Clash Of Champions.
Reigns and Rusev undoubtedly had great chemistry together and Rusev had his best series of matches with him. Reigns would dethrone Rusev to become United States Champion for the first time in his career.
