Ethan Page is very confident he’ll walk away from his next match with a win.
WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard spoke with Ethan Page ahead of his match at ROH Final Battle on Friday. Page has an ‘I Quit’ match against Tony Nese at the pay-per-view, and his confidence is high heading into the showdown.
“I don’t want to come off as sinister or conniving, but this has always been in my plan. I wanted the opportunity to go to Ring of Honor so I could get these types of opportunities and to be put in contract signings,” he explained, “to be put in a position to cut promos that make people feel something or to care about my journey in my wrestling career and to slowly start building my momentum and my steam back and adding value to my name, and adding more value to what I bring to the table with the company. And Ring of Honor is in that company.
“So to be put in this position has always been the goal. So I’m happy that I’m here,” Page said. “Obviously, I thought I showed how motivated I was against Kenny [Omega]. These aren’t opportunities that I’m taking lightly and I’m very prepared and ready, especially for this Friday.”
No quit in me
Page said that he’s not worried about saying ‘I quit’ at Final Battle. He noted how it’s nice going into a match that the knows he’s going to win.
“Oh, no, no. There’s no way it comes out. This is the first match in my career that no one decides if I lose but me. I can’t get knocked out and pinned. I can’t tap out, I can’t pass out. This is kind of just up to me. I have to say, ‘I quit,’ and I don’t really think there’s a position or point that they can make me get to that I would say it. So, knowing I’m going to win is pretty dope. I haven’t had a match where I’ve already known I was going to win before it started, especially in my career.”
A shot at redemption
Ethan Page had his first match in Ring Of Honor back in 2009, so he is a legacy talent of sorts. Page sees this run as a chance at redemption, getting a second chance to right some wrongs.
“Honestly, it’s kind of a bit of redemption. In the weirdest way, I’m almost getting to redo so many pivotal points of my career, but now, later, I’m a more mature and grown performer. I had a feud with Tony Nese very similar about my body in EVOLVE Wrestling that culminated in this crazy hardcore match WrestleMania weekend. I’ve had a feud with Darby [Allin] that ended up translating to AEW,” Page explained.
“I worked with Ring of Honor before, and now I’m getting to kind of rewrite what my name means to Ring of Honor again. I’m very happy with how this is going in comparison to how the last one was going,” he added. “So, it’s pretty cool that I get to kind of right these wrongs and get a second chance. I actually feel like right now I’m in a very big rebirth or resurgence of my career.”
