Shayna Baszler: Josh Barnett Challenged Me To Find The ‘Other Stuff’ That Makes Me Unique

Shayna Baszler likes showing fans what she’s interested in outside of pro wrestling.

WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard spoke with Shayna Baszler at WrestleMania about her Submission Magician nickname. Baszler was asked if she’d ever consider leaning into the “Magician” part more as part of her character on WWE TV.

“In real life, I carry around a deck of cards. It’s like a fidget spinner sort of thing for me,” Shayna Baszler said. “I just fidget with manipulating and doing ways to shuffle and stuff. I’ve had it in backstages coincidentally, so it’s not something I’d be opposed to.”

Baszler ended up using a deck of cards in her entrance over the summer. She was asked if she had any other tricks up her sleeves when the pair caught up again at SummerSlam.

What else do you bring?

“I’m into all kinds of stuff. If you ever get time to do a real sit down, I have a thousand interests. Josh Barnett worked with me throughout my career. And one thing he always ingrained in us on our fight team is, ‘Everyone knows that you train and you work out. So, that’s a given. People are already going to know that about you. What else do you bring? That’s the stuff they want to know.’ The stuff you think is boring, the stuff you do to relax and get away from the training and the fighting and stuff,” Baszler explained, “that’s the stuff people want to know about.

“So, I always like to sprinkle that in when I can because every single one of us on the card works out and trains and whatnot. That’s how we got to where we are,” Baszler added. “What makes me stand out from everyone else is the other stuff. So, I’m down to do whatever and show other sides of my [personality].”

Baszler said she doesn’t need to be so blatant about everything, but she does want to show things that are real. She mentioned the playing cards again, noting how she does it on her own time, so it’s not a stretch to do it on television, either.
