Ranking the Top 5 WWE SummerSlam Pay-Per-Views

The waiting is almost over for SummerSlam 2017 when the top WWE stars will do battle at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It will be the 30th renewal of the prestigious event and is sure to throw up many thrills, spills and surprises in the Big Apple.

For those who cannot wait, here is a little reminder of the top five SummerSlams down the years.

At number five, the 1991 edition at Madison Square Garden saw Macho Man Randy Savage & The First Lady of Wrestling, Miss Elizabeth, get married.

In the ring, Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior beat Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa and General Adnan against the backdrop of the first Gulf War, while Bret Hart defeated Mr. Perfect to take the Intercontinental Championship.

The whole night had a feel-good actor about it from start to finish, with US patriotism at its height.

Fourth on the list is the 2008 SummerSlam at Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, which witnessed John Cena and Batista’s first one-on-one match, with the latter coming out on top.

While Big Show took care of Bam Neely and Triple H downed The Great Khali, the undoubted highlight was The Undertaker’s ‘Hell in a Cell’ match-up with Edge.

Lasting nearly half an hour, The Deadman prevailed much to the delight of the sell-out crowd.

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, N.Y. was the venue for the 2002 renewal and sits at number three on the list.

The great and good of the sport were all on view as Kurt Angle beat Rey Mysterio, Edge defeated Eddie Guerrero and Shawn Michaels, in his first fight for four years, got the better of Triple H in an Unsanctioned Street Fight.

Brock Lesnar fought The Rock for the Undisputed Championship and emerged with the belt.

The 1992 showpiece is at number two and saw SummerSlam move out of the USA for the first and only time as London played host to the event with record-breaking crowds of 85,000 packed in the iconic venue.

The star-studded bill saw Shawn Michaels take down Rick Martel and The Undertaker, in his first SummerSlam appearance, beat Kamala.

A contest between The Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage would normally take centre stage but, despite the former’s victory, it was the final match of the night that whipped the crowd up into frenzy.

The British Bulldog, in front of his home fans, defeated Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Championship in a 25-minute bout.

The gold medal for Summerslams, however, goes to the 2013 edition at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

It was full of action as Bray Wyatt beat Kane in a Ring of Fire Match and Brock Lesnar was too hot for CM Punk.

Daniel Bryan beat John Cena in an epic contest for the WWE Championship only for guest referee Triple H to then turn on the victor and allow Randy Orton to take him down in a ‘Money in the Bank cash-in match’.

So that was all in the past but this year’s SummerSlam should prove to be equally as exciting as Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman square off in a Fatal 4-Way match.

For this who like a flutter on the wrestling, the bookmaker reviews at Bookmakeradvisor.com will point you in the right direction for the best sites to bet with.

Naomi faces Natalya and Alexa Bliss will go toe-to-toe with Bayley in the women’s event, while Jinder Mahal has been slated to take on either John Cena or Shinsuke Nakamura.

Details are still to be confirmed but, hold onto your hats, the highlight of the WWE year is almost upon us and is one not to be missed.
