Guest Editorial: The Swick Spin – 2015 WWE Battleground Reaction

wwe battlegroundA disagreement with a good friend of mine who, like myself, I consider to be pretty wrestling savvy over the quality of WWE Battleground on the WWE Network last night has compelled me to put forth my opinion and analysis of the event. I’m going to stick to the main card of the event. Wade Barrett is the King of the Ring, a moniker that used to mean something and his entire program with R-Truth as well as his relegation to the preshow is silly to me. He’s a guy who should be having matches with Cesaro tearing the house down. He is a proven talent who I hope either gets something to sink his teeth into soon or goes back to Bad News Barrett. At least then his promos will be entertaining again.

Orton vs. Sheamus

As repetitive as this feud has become I enjoyed the match. The hometown pop for Orton added energy to what could have otherwise been a dead crowd had the match not been in St. Louis and a dead air match for those watching at home. Great back and forth between the two with both hitting their move combinations in slightly different ways then we’ve seen before. Orton eating the Brogue Kick and then hitting the RKO for the win was a nice finish. Sheamus has the briefcase; he’s still a made man, so he did not need a win as much as Orton who was off for the last PPV. However it is time to split these two up now. Orton has a “quality” win to set him up for a fresh one on one at SummerSlam next month.

Prime Time Players (champions) vs. The New Day

Love the feud and loved the match. While I disagree with the Prime Time Players retaining this was a solid tag team bout. New Day is damn entertaining love or hate them. The before match promo had the crowd going and me laughing the whole way through. While Paul Heyman is the best promo guy in the business Xavier Woods is the most entertaining ringside superstar in the WWE. The guy never stops talking. His “Grab your briefcase and put on your three piece because it’s time to go to work” line last night was gold. When New Day has any opposing superstar in their corner all three of them regardless of who is competing for them play great heels with the quick tags, double teams and Xavier’s constant trash talk. In the end, Woods goes down; Young hits his finisher then tags the big man Titus to hit his. Solid ending but I think with the lull in the tag team division and the quality of work both in and out of the ring the Tag Team Titles on the New Day make the stable and the belts a bit more relevant.
