The Undertaker vs. Edge
SummerSlam ’08
On part two of this series, we talked about The Undertaker and Batista inside Hell in a Cell, and the great match they had that brought about the return of Edge. Almost one year later, after the re-ignition of one of the best programs in Smackdown history, the two would meet inside the Cell to finish their career-defining rivalry.
I’ll admit, I never liked the Edge and Vickie Guerrero story. While she was a great heel general manager and on-screen personality, Vickie brought a “soap opera-like” drama to the Edge/Undertaker story that wasn’t necessary. These two already hated each other. They’d already tried to kill each other multiple times before this match. It served as a vehicle to re-instate the Undertaker and set up this Hell in a Cell match, but I’m glad WWE kept the “Family” backstage and out of the in-ring competition.
Bell-to-bell this is a fantastic match. The self-proclaimed “ultimate opportunist” brought his mastery of the Tables, Ladders and Chairs match into the cage, and dominated the Deadman for a good portion of the action. The final act for ‘Taker was brutal, and fitting: a spear, followed by the deadly con-chair-to, and a chokeslam straight to hell.
After the match, Undertaker brought Edge up on a ladder and slammed him through the ring, then brought up plumes of fire from the hole. It was completely over-the-top, but I don’t think they could have ended that rivalry any other way.
