Kane vs. The Undertaker
Hell in a Cell ’10

The Undertaker and Kane are the mythological beasts of pro wrestling, and there’s been a whole lot of matches between them over the years. But this one, more than any other, displays how directionless and without identity the WWE product was in 2010.

file_186419_8_kane(2)The actual meat of this Hell in a Cell was fine. I won’t say it was necessarily interesting, but until the third act they hadn’t done anything “wrong”, per say.

The finish saw a referee go down, and a swarm of officials open the cage to retrieve/replace him. Despite there being very little precedent for this – and we’ve seen referees get destroyed inside the Cell before – I can get past that creative decision, as it was really just a way to get Paul Bearer inside the structure.

Basically, the Undertaker lost to a beam of light. The Deadman motioned for the Tombstone Piledriver, and they turned off the lights and queued pyro and lightning from the stage – which you should NEVER, EVER, EVER do during a wrestling match – and then Paul Bearer took the lid of the urn and…blinded him? Hypnotized him? Controlled him with the mystical power of a pot? Whatever the official reason was, they put some bright LED lights inside an urn, and used it to end a Hell in a Cell match…IN 2010!

Never mind that the Paul Bearer turning on Undertaker spot was beyond played out at that point. Never mind that it completely castrated the “Monster” Kane on his road back to the World Heavyweight title. They ended a Hell in a Cell match with some light in a jar.

Unforgivable.
