#1 – Rey Mysterio, Jr. vs. Eddy Guerrero
WCW Halloween Havoc
October 26, 1997
Rey’s match with Psychosis was great, but the WCW crowd had only one month to familiarize themselves with his body of work going into that PPV. By Halloween Havoc the following year, Mysterio was becoming a major star in the WCW Cruiswerweight division, having won the title and defended it successfully against greats like Dean Malenko and Ultimo Dragon. Meanwhile, a future Hall of Famer that was quickly becoming a veteran, Eddie Guerrero (spelled “Eddy” at the time), had found a nice spot for himself as a heel within the division.
After Mysterio’s battle against the nWo, and Eddie’s fight with the Four Horsemen, the two collided in a Mask vs. Title match. The king of defending his iconic mask all throughout Mexico, Mysterio would go on to win here and secure his second Cruiswerweight Championship in the process. And with the exception of The Outsiders unmasking him in 1999, which many consider to be one of the biggest mistakes in nWo booking history, Rey would eventually build a stellar 10-1 record in Luchas de Apuestas competition.
This is one of my personal favorite matches, and one that Tony Schiavone calls “one of the greatest title matches in PPV history”.
