This Match of the Year was the finals in an incredible tournament to crown inaugural WWE Tag Team Champions, following the creation of Smackdown and the historic brand split. Against all odds Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle, who had been at odds for months and teased turning on each other at every turn, came together to defeat Los Guerreros to earn a spot in the finals at No Mercy. Their opponents, a newly re-masked Rey Mysterio who had come over from WCW earlier in the year, and a young tag team legend named Edge, who was looking for a brand new partner.
This tournament sparked a great trend of makeshift tag teams that populated the post-Attitude Era Smackdown landscape.
