Wrestlezone Top 10: Rey Mysterio’s Greatest Matches

#6 – Mysterio vs. Guerrera vs. Kidman

WCW Starrcade
December 27, 1998

Billy KidmanIn most 3-way or 4-way wrestling matches, you’ll see two competitors in the ring 95% of the time, with the extras alternating in and out to freshen things up, and occasionally they break up pins. In this battle for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, all three guys battled for nearly 15 minutes with dozens of unique, innovative moves that got everyone involved.

Billy Kidman went into Starrcade the champion, facing off against two members of the Latino World Order in Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Juventud Guerrera. You have to give Kidman a lot of credit, as he wrestled an incredible 15-minute match, then came back out to face the LWO’s leader Eddy Guerrero in another 10-minute match. Mysterio would eventually help his friend and occasionlly tag partner Kidman defeat Guerrero, officially picking sides between the two.

#5 – Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho

WWE The Bash
June 28, 2009

After transforming his entire persona in 2008 and having the greatest rivalry of his career with Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho turned his sights on Rey Mysterio and the Intercontinental Championship. The two veterans clashed for several months, meeting in many PPV matches, but this is by far and away the best among them. Apart from WWE blatantly ignoring that Rey lost his mask in WCW, and it was Vince McMahon who demanded he put it back on – “…he’ll have to unmask forever!” – the Luchas de Apuestas stipulation of Mask vs. Championship added so much to this program.

In my estimation, this match is Rey Mysterio’s best work in the last decade.
