#3 – Charlotte
If Charlotte was a part of the WWE’s main roster, she would top this list with ease. I don’t recall the last time we saw a woman come through the developmental system with that much natural talent and natural athleticism. She “gets” the psychology of being a heel, and seems incredibly comfortable in the ring with just about anyone. Maybe that’s the trick with working the same people over and over again in NXT, but that same thing can be said to all of pro wrestling, where guys work with their opponents dozens of times at live events before they face off on PPV.
Charlotte is good. She’s going to be a Divas Champion, and probably sooner than later. If you haven’t seen her match with Natalya from NXT Takeover – which I’ve now referenced for a third time – you’re missing out on one of the best matches of the year.
#2 – Naomi
Naomi hasn’t been a wrestler for that long, and she really doesn’t have a ton of training in the business, but she just “gets it”. I don’t know if it’s because she spent more time training, or because she was a part of NXT back when it was a competition show, or because she’s been dating an Uso, or because she’s married into an old-school wrestling family – whatever the reason, she’s incredibly good for not having been around for more than a couple of years. Right now it seems like Naomi is the proverbial bridesmaid of the Divas division, never the bride. She’s had good matches with AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka and with Paige, but she always ends up with the title just out of reach.
#1 – AJ Lee
Oh come on…you knew this was coming. Back for one week and she’s all the talk of the Divas division. With a lackluster title reign debut from Paige, the return of AJ has immediately sparked interest in a feud between the two. They’ve wrestled two non-matches on Raw that flip-flopped the title – now it’s time we get our real PPV match, which will likely happen at Battleground later this month.
There’s a reason she’s the longest reigning Divas Champion of all time – albeit not a very difficult task if you really look at the numbers – and it’s not just because she’s (apparently) married to CM Punk. My biggest frustration is that certain fans do nothing but chant for Punk in all of her segments, which takes away from how good she really is out in the ring.
The Divas division is at a point of resurgence right now, with tons of great talent and even more names down in NXT waiting to make a come-up. But right now, until Charlotte arrives, AJ Lee reigns supreme.
