#6 – Paige
You would think having just lost the Divas Championship, and making such a shocking debut on the main roster, Paige would be much higher up the list. And I’ll be very honest – I want her to be there. I was a big fan of Paige during her run as NXT Women’s Champion. I thought she was consistently good-to-great in the ring, and carried the belt acting like a real champ. Nobody held a candle to her in NXT as far as looking the part of a confident and deserving champion.
Unfortunately, Paige’s move to the main roster has not filled me with confidence. It’s worth pointing out that all my issues surrounding her have very little to do with her, and more to do with the creative team, and whoever is backstage putting the actual matches together. The second Paige won the title she turned into a frail, pasty underdog that got beaten down for 95% of the match. It is impossible to take a new talent seriously – which is sort of important when she’s holding your title – when you book her to be out of her element at every turn. The night she lost clean in England, I knew they were just holding the title for AJ Lee’s eventual return.
It’s not that people in WWE don’t like Paige – they wouldn’t have called her up otherwise. But they’re not booking her like a champion. She’s going to have to pay her dues, start from the bottom, and get the fans behind her naturally. Unfortunately, you can’t book her to do that, and also book her as your champion, or even as the chaser to the championship. I think her problem is just a fatal flaw of the current WWE booking committee.
