Guest Column: Hot Tips From a Foreigner in a Global War – Ring of Honor vs. New Japan Pro Wrestling Live Notes & Review

More Wiki surprises. I had seen both Briscoes work before, yet was still fairly surprised how insanely over they were early in the evening with a barely-liquored crowd, so I took to Wiki to learn about them in the way all semi-literate people learn about things now. Given how authentic and convincing they are in their portrayal of feral-but-endearing scummers, I was not exactly surprised that their Wiki article was littered with notes of constant no-show drama, and even had a subsection dedicated to Jay's social media gaybashing. However, what I didn't expect to see was “Trained by: Van Hammer.” Wow! I can't say how much influence he and his flying V had on the Briscoes, but it is curious that Van Hammer himself has a Wiki subsection for “Wrestlers Trained” and Crazii Shea is the only entry. Just awesome.

IMG_2772The last two minutes of the three-way tag title match made me aroused. Typically, I have mixed feelings about when tag team matches just devolve into a gauntlet-style spotfest of one guy clearing another out before being inevitably cleared out himself. Yet, something about the anarchic nature here was delightfully organized chaos. Perfect timing on the spots, accurate ring dives, the Young Bucks' tombstone spike piledriver on Shelley severely depressed the ring to the point it was visible with the naked eye, and for an outsider like myself, More Bang For Your Buck was poetry in motion. The final throes of the match make you internally debate how tag team wrestling isn't a bigger commodity.

Dressing for success. Speaking of the Young Bucks, I was spellbound (and I was not alone in this feeling) by their ring attire. Clearly, these guys can sew or know some bad folks that do. As if the slightly shiny Jackson Pollock paintsplatter pants weren't good enough, they added additional accent fringes below the knee and have blue contrasting pockets on the ass and belt loops and belts. It's like a divine mixture of The Rockers and Triple H's old velvet pants. Kazuchika Okada's ring gear makes him look like a prince from a future alien technocracy, and was nearly as over as he was. Jushin Liger is probably a top-10 all-time entrant in the attire game. Meanwhile, A.J. Styles, who used to look like a character from Dawson's Creek, now has an emo swoop haircut and wears football receiving gloves. I appreciate that they have practical in-ring functions, but he looks like an NFL safety ready to for Playgirl. This goes for you, too, marks: shoutouts to the girl with the aqua green topknot hair and a denim vest with a fox bedazzled on it over a classic Hot Rod ringer, you can marry me any time.
