WrestleMania XXVII
The Undertaker def. Triple H
I will never forget the initial build to this match. For weeks, maybe months, the internet was rampant with rumors that Sting would be making his long-awaited debut with the WWE, and was "definitely" going to be facing the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Somebody even made a fake poster for the match, "leaking" it online – to be fair, it's awesome (see:right).
So it goes, Undertaker made his scheduled return to Monday Night Raw following a cryptic series of vignettes that had been playing for several weeks prior. But before he could say anything, Triple H's music hit and the Game came down, face-to-face with the Deadman. This was a totally unexpected, but absolutely magical moment – the two looked at each other, looked at the WrestleMania sign…and that was it. No words necessary.
In story, Triple H was trying to get some revenge and do what his best friend Shawn Michaels gave up his career trying to do. He also wanted to prove that he was better than ole' HBK. This match didn't quite live up to the absolutely phenomenal duo of matches Shawn had with 'Taker, but it was very, very good. At nearly 30 minutes, the two fought a brutal war that momentarily had me believing the streak could actually come to an end. Realistically, we all knew that was impossible, but with these two, they made you believe.
And if nothing else, this match set up for what was yet to come…
