Jack Swagger – One Step Down
This one could take my regular readers by surprise. They know I’m a big Jack Swagger supporter, but I fear the position he’s being put in so quickly is simply setting him up for failure yet again.
Dutch Mantel is a great addition, but I’m not sure how well this racy, controversial gimmick will get over in the long run. It hasn’t worked well in recent memory and I don’t know that the majority of fans will really be able to connect. That being said, taking some of the vocal pressure off of Swagger will help in the long run as that seems to be the area many fans don’t enjoy about Swagger’s work.
What scares me most about Swagger’s situation is the upcoming World Title match with Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio is still getting over as a newfound babyface, and while he’s doing just that, and quickly, can he carry a main event program with the likes of Swagger on the biggest stage of the year? I’m not so sure.
I’m a huge fan of Swagger, and even I would say this match comes up short in just about every way possible.
Swagger and this new gimmick is not over, yet. Del Rio is starting to finally get over. I don’t see how either man can help the other right now. This is the reason I won’t be surprised if the SD main event is ultimately changed between now and WrestleMania. At least, I personally think it should be. Add Sheamus, or Henry, or Show, or Orton, or all of them. Give us a reason to actually care. A solo match between Del Rio and Swagger won’t, and I don’t see even seven weeks to work on it being enough timeto make us.
