Mt. Killamanjaro: Sweet Transvestite; A TNA Genesis Review

Sorry, the absurdity of this Brooke Hogan angle has gotten to me. I’ve gone and messed up my Rocky Horror references again! Let’s try this one more time…

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again; A TNA Genesis Review

What year is it? At just 48 hours before my birthday, I could have sworn it was 2013, but tonight’s PPV had me rushing to my Kelly Kelly wall calendar, checking outside my window for Michael J Fox and making sure I hadn’t suddenly become Bill Murray. Too much pop culture? The point is, most of tonight’s match card could have happened at ANY point in the last 6-8 months, and it wouldn’t have messed up even a fraction of TNA’s weekly continuity.

Devon’s the TV Champion. Joseph Park is still losing matches after teasing an Abyss return. The same guys are still involved in the World Title picture. And you can’t deny Christopher Daniels’ pelvic thrusts just scream Time Warp (suck it, KB). It’s not all bad though; 2012 was a particularly good year for TNA, at least early on. We actually start out with a few contests that haven’t been rehashed to the point of redundancy!

(1) TNA World Tag Team Championship Match
Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez (c) def. Matt Morgan & Joey Ryan to retain

Rating: C+

In a twist on the usual booking for the tag champs, Hernandez actually worked the majority of the match, with Chavo Guerrero in the hot tag position. It’s a small thing that many may not pick up on, but for those of us who have seen virtually every composition of the basic tag team match available, it’s the small things that matter.

All we’ve really seen out of Chavo Guerrero during his short time in TNA, is that he’s really good at doing a head-scissors takedown, using a few of Eddie’s old signature maneuvers, and getting picked apart for the lion’s share of a match. Big Supermex is the guy that usually comes in at the end to clean house, throw around his weight, and set up Chavo for the Frog Splash. That still happened here in this match, but the steps leading up to the finish were shaken up considerably, leading to a fairly enjoyable opening contest.

Still haven’t received any sort of answer as to why Morgan and Ryan are together. Their loss tonight may very well mean TNA has realized it too, and will finally allow the Blueprint to loss about 210 pounds of dead weight. It’s nothing against Ryan; he’s got a ridiculous gimmick and I’ve heard nothing but praise from my friends who have worked the independents with him. It’s simply that at this point, he’s the only one gaining from being leashed to his 7-foot partner.
