It wasn’t Sting…
In 2011 WWE began to air a series of dark, ominous vignettes hyping…something, set to make it’s return/debut on “2.21.11”. It caused a big to-do with wrestling fans, as they argued over the more obvious choice – the Undertaker – or the moment fanboys had been dreaming about for over two decades: Sting, the Icon, in a WWE ring. The senseless bickering between camps was relentless; a very convincing image even surfaced that dumped feul onto the already raging fire.
What followed would disappoint many a wrestling fan…for about two minutes. I will count myself amoung the masses that had bought into the hype that maybe, juuuust maybe it could be Sting. Of course it wasn’t, and as the promo counted down to its final seconds, the Undertaker appeared on the tron and the live crowd went nuts.
Just seconds after the Deadman had reached the ring, before he could even remove his signature coat and hat, the iconic music of a 13-time World Champion rang out in the arena. Triple H and the Undertaker would go on to cut one of the best, most powerful segments in wrestling history…without uttering a single word. The phrase gets tossed around a lot, but you could feel the electricity in the building. I laughed to myself as the Game forced the Undertaker to wait, as he posed on each of the turnbuckles, making sure to look back each time to make sure he got his point across. And then they came face to face, before Triple H would stare up at the giant WrestleMania sign, and ever-so-slowly, ‘Taker joined him.
The thumb crossed over the Deadman’s throat, and the DX chops were thrown; it was Undertaker vs. Triple H at WrestleMania!
