Mt. Killamanjaro: Night of Champions Review – Punk Retains, Boston Sucks, & Kane’s Going to Disneyland

Mt. Killamanjaro — @MikeKillam

I had a lot of expectations going into Night of Champions. I blame WWE for actually putting together a wrestling card I wanted to see. The result left me with all kinds of mixed feelings, including (but not limited to) disappointment, satisfaction, intrigue, anger, joy, YES!, NO!, I AM THE CHAMPIONSHIP!, and frustration.

Let’s start things off with a match I thought was an instant recipe for success…

Intercontinental Championship
The Miz (c) def. Sin Cara, Cody Rhodes & Rey Mysterio

I’m sure WWE thought starting a pay-per-view off with a match like this was a great idea; in theory I The Mizcompletely agree. Multi-man matches, especially those with Rey Mysterio involved, have a history of getting the crowd kick-started early on. Unfortunately, the TD Garden didn’t respond, and that would be a theme throughout the night.

In this instance, I blame Sin Cara. I hate to unnecessarily pile on the already massive mountain of hate for Sin Cara, but every time he got in the ring the life was sucked out of the live Boston crowd. Even the first ever face-off between Cara and Rey Mysterio – a Mexican lucha dream match  – only drew a mild reaction from some of the fans in the first few rows. Even Frank the Clown didn’t seem to care…

Despite his style, Sin Cara is still slow and clumsy in the ring, and it’s all the more apparent when he’s in there with perhaps the greatest high-flyer in history, and two other solid athletes. There were several times where he simply stood on the outside of the ring, waiting to come in and hit his spot. I’ve seen more ring awareness in development camps.

Rating: 2/5The finish was creative; Miz retaining gave me my first of seven positive predictions. But Sin Cara, a flat Boston crowd and a lack of importance going in ruined what could have been a great 4-way match.
