What DID Bother Me: The Second Grading Scale
As I mentioned before, the other grading scale I use for at least major pay per views, is not something that's revealed inside the ring. It determines whether that feeling in our gut is going to be left completely satisfied or disappointed when the pay per view finally fades to black.
What did the pay per view do to set up the future. Why do we feel the need to tune into Raw the next night? Title changes can accomplish it. Gimmicked finishes can do it sometimes. Returns and other surprises. Heel or face turns…
A lot of this is due to pre-PPV hype as well and fans' resulting expectations. For example, it's likely not difficult for WWE to match or even exceed our expectations with events like Over The Limit, or No Way Out. We simply don't expect much from them in the first place.
Then, you take an event like SummerSlam, still thought of by some as the second biggest wrestling event of the year, and it's clear to see why we anticipate so much.
I'm afraid most will feel as if WWE didn't deliver last night in this regard.
The finish to the Del Rio/Sheamus match suggested there's more, but we've seen so much between these two lately, I'm not sure anyone is fully committed to care. Nothing spectular took place in the WWE Title match. And the attention given to Triple H last night after his loss to Lesnar wasn't something that's going to make me rush to my TV set tonight to find out what it meant.
I wasn't necessarily expecting a homerun storyline of some kind, but I'm not sure WWE even made it to second base last night.
