What’s Bothering Me: Owen/Pillman, Punk vs Rhodes, Santino

Cody Rhodes vs CM Punk#1. Cody Rhodes to challenge CM Punk after Daniel Bryan?

No! No! No!

I guess I didn’t read where this rumor came from, but if it’s out there, let me be the first to balk at it sight unseen.

To preface, I doubt this ever happens. Even if the idea is out there, has been pitched, considered, etc., Vince McMahon will quickly put the kibosh on it.

An additional disclaimer – I like Cody Rhodes. I’m a fan. He has surprised many since exiting his tag team situation with Ted DiBiase. I know I’m not the only one that saw their futures in complete reverse from the way they’ve actually turned out.

That being said, Rhodes is NOT ready for the main event. At least, not any serious run at it. And I don’t think he should even be in a singles match challenging for one of the two major titles. If anything, he’s the fourth guy in a fatal fourway bout. And he absolutely loses, always.

If Punk wasn’t where he is today, if Daniel Bryan wasn’t where he is right now, maybe then – and only maybe – could I see Rhodes being the go-to guy for a similar path as them.

Why? It’s simple. I’m, as a fan, not ready for the main event title picture to be made up of ALL 6’, barely 200lbs champions and challengers. There’s only room for a couple at a time, and right now, I’d take Punk and D. Bryan over Rhodes every day of the week.

I’m aware some wrestlers work and even look bigger than they actually are, but Rhodes isn’t one of those guys. He looks every bit of his size, and his size is MUCH smaller than most on top.

If you’re a serious fan of Cody Rhodes, I understand you’ll come up at me with tons of venom. I don’t blame you at all. Stand up for your favorites. I won’t even argue the accolades you throw out and the credit you give Rhodes. He’s good.

Right now, though, he’s a good role player, nothing more. You have to have role players in wrestling. They can’t ALL be given the biggest pushes, they can’t all be elevated at the same time, and they can’t all be world champions. That’s a simple fact.

I’ll end by asking you to close your eyes and picture something. Picture Cody Rhodes as the NEW WWE CHAMPION!!! Can you do that? Without laughing…

If you can, I won’t even attempt any further to change your mind.
