CM Punk vs Daniel Bryan – ONE STEP UP
Out of nowhere. I certainly didn't see this coming on Raw.
Daniel Bryan wins the "Beat the Clock" challenge and will now challenge CM Punk at Over The Limit for the WWE Championship. Bryan's winning double-time as Smackdown this week still showed him heavily involved in the World title picture as well, although I expect Del Rio will take over that spot for the actual pay per view.
There's no doubt that Punk and Bryan will produce yet another great match on May 20th. The question is going to be the storyline aspect of it. There's very little time between now and the pay per view. Is this a one-off filler match or could it be the beginning of a longer program?
With the small technicality of Daniel Bryan still being a Smackdown star, I can't imagine he's going to go much further than Over The Limit with Punk. Not right now, anyway. Then again, what's next for Punk? He seems to be done with Jericho. I doubt he'll work Brock this soon. Cena is stuck with Johnny and Tensai for now.
It was unexpected, but Daniel Bryan just might be the best option for Punk going forward. The next two pay per views are generally time wasters and even the MITB event is more about the actual MITB match(es) than it is the championship bouts featured there. CM Punk vs Daniel Bryan could lead us into SummerSlam.
I doubt that's the plan, but I'm down with it if it is.
