Nick’s 12/28 Raw Review: The Good, The Bad & The Wrestling

The Good

This should be moderately easy as the Vince McMahon address followed by the exchange between him and Shawn Michaels was the highlight of the show for me. It worked very well and in a number of different ways.

First off, it’s so refreshing to see Shawn Michaels take something seriously for a change. I know I’m not alone when I say that the comedy act between him and Triple H is getting stale to say the least, but here’s the reason why: if wrestling aims at emulating a sport, than it should leave little room for comedy. The goal of a professional basketball player is not to be funny. Sure there are showman, but the overall goal is to win a championship. The same should be said of pro wrestlers. Why compete in pro wrestling if you don’t want to win matches and titles? Why is Abraham Washington on ECW? He doesn’t wrestle. Moreover, why is he not connecting with the fans? Because he’s NOT A WRESTLER, and people are there to be entertained, yes, but via wrestling mixed with what should be a moderate dose of entertainment.

So last night’s serious turn for Shawn Michaels was excellent and much needed. He is fantastic on the mic, and it’s much more entertaining to see him aggressively wanting to win than to see him aggressively wanting to make fun of a little person.
