Nick’s Picks: WrestleZone’s Annual Awards Of 2009

Best Female Wrestler of the Year: Tara

This was a very difficult choice for me. Mainly due in part to the fact that both The TNA Knockout’s Division and The WWE Divas Division were consistently up and down this year. They each had moments when they seemed flourishing, but more so they had moments when they were very fledgling. You would think that women like Gail Kim, Awesome Kong, Beth Phoenix, Melina, Taylor Wilde and Sarita would be sure shots for this type of award, but they were used so badly by their respective promotions in 2009 that they have to be ruled out. For me, this award came down to the choice between Tara and Mickie James. But if you look at it, neither of them really had that fantastic of a 2009. Tara was out of the business from late January until May, with the exception of her appearance at Wrestlemania and we all know how that went. Similarly, Mickie James did become the second woman in WWE history to win both the Womens Title and The Divas Title, but does The Divas Title really mean anything? James has subsequently been relegated to the “B” show and is involved in a weak story line. So I went with Tara because she has become only the second woman in history to hold both The WWE Womens Title and The TNA Knockouts Title, which in my opinion are two prestigious titles. Additionally, she seems to be rejuvenated since jumping ship to TNA and is able to really flex her wings to the best of her ability. She hadn’t been able to do that in WWE for years.
