STILL THE MAN

Ric Flair is 61. But he still cuts the best promo in wrestling. That was evident on the latest edition of Impact. Flair, unleashed in TNA like he wasn’t in WWE, did a FANTASTIC job of actually selling a PPV. Too many interviews sell agendas, narcissism, merchandise, lifestyles, nonsense, everything but tickets and PPVs.

That said, nobody’s going to buy Victory Road. Flair’s a great promo, not a miracle worker.

Flair is wrestling’s biggest paradox. Still the best promo in the biz. Still very capable in the ring. That’s a compliment to Flair, but a scathing indictment of those much younger and much lesser. How’s it feel being left in the dust by a 61-year-old?

There is only one greatest of all time. Flair is certainly unique. Hulk Hogan never passed the torch by way of Supergluing it to his hand. Flair tries and tries to pass the torch, but those capable of taking it are few and far between, especially in TNA.

I hope Flair never quits. He’s not Ric Flair circa 1978-89. But nobody else is, either. Flair is good, and good enough.

WWE’s new policy of quieting audience “whooos!” by banning knife-edge chops is both petty and typical. Oh, I can see WWE’s point. Flair is somebody else’s talent. No point promoting him, however minutely and inadvertently. But again, he’s the greatest of all time. That should warrant respect, and an exception.

Maybe WWE should have Cody Rhodes do nothing BUT knife-edge chops. At least he’d get SOME reaction, albeit borrowed.
