Welcome or welcome back to our weekly WWE SmackDown hits and misses series where we recap all the good and bad from the show.
Miss – Opening segment between Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso & The Bloodline
Another segment where the Royal Rumble winner came out to pick his WrestleMania opponent but didn’t because we’re still two months away from the PLE. WWE needs to figure out how to be creative with these storylines. As for the promo, both Jey and Cody felt off in their delivery. Even Jacob Fatu, who’s usually energetic, seemed a bit off. In the end, this promo was just an excuse to set up the tag team main event for WWE SmackDown.
Miss – Bianca Belair vs. Piper Niven on WWE SmackDown
These two have had hundreds of matches against each other at this point. What’s the point if Bianca is going to come out the winner every single time? Piper needed the win here. She’s the one that needs the push. Bianca is already an established star. Piper’s win could’ve possibly added to the storyline with Chelsea Green. A major miss in this writer’s opinion!
Miss – Pretty Deadly go after NXT Tag Team Champions #DIY
Yup, Prince botched the name of the WWE Tag Team Championship by referring to them as the NXT Tag Team Titles. The promo went from bad to worse. As for the match, it was okay with Pretty Deadly getting the win to set up a future tag team title match. Speaking of tag team title matches, when do Street Profits get a shot at the titles?
Miss – Alexa Bliss on WWE SmackDown
Alexa Bliss got one of the biggest pops of the night at the Royal Rumble. WWE didn’t care to explain what Bliss did for the two years she’d been away from television. Instead, they just put her in a chamber qualifier against Candice LeRae. There was no way they were going to let Bliss lose the qualifier. But she should not have been booked in the match to begin with. A vignette or a live promo or something like that would’ve made more sense.
Hit – LA Knight & Drew McIntyre go at it
WWE really needs to pivot to LA Knight versus Drew McIntyre because this feud sounds far more interesting than McIntyre versus Priest. Plus, Knight’s promo on McIntyre followed by what looked like a shoot during their triple-threat match looks like the perfect setup for this potential rivalry. McIntyre winning the chamber qualifier at Knight’s expense needs to be used to set up a WrestleMania match between the former tag team partners.
Hit – Charlotte Flair meets Tiffany Stratton on WWE SmackDown
This was another tease towards a Charlotte Flair heel turn. Flair’s current gimmick has the potential to be one of the biggest heels in WWE. Tiffany needs to be the babyface in this feud. This writer liked how Charlotte trolled both Rhea and Tiffany by calling them kid and child, respectively. That said, WWE better not have Charlotte go over Tiffany at WrestleMania.
Hit – Solo Sikoa is back
Solo Sikoa attacked Cody Rhodes after the tag team main event. The former Tribal Chief didn’t have The Bloodline back-up. The show ended on a cliffhanger which I thought was a solid way to cap off the night. Let’s see how WWE moves forward with The Bloodline storyline on the road to Elimination Chamber.
