AEW Dynamite Review: Hits And Misses For February 5

Welcome or welcome back to our weekly AEW Dynamite hits and misses series where we recap all the good and bad from the show.

Hit – Will Ospreay vs. Mark Davis

They really rushed Mark Davis’ heel turn, as he was revealed as the new member of The Don Callis Family. Davis had previously sided with Ospreay against the group. Maybe they didn’t have creative plans for a Mark Davis solo run. Davis has an old school vibe to him, so he could potentially become a breakout player. The match with Ospreay was short but sweet. Kenny Omega’s post-match promo felt like a show closer with all the pyro, which wasn’t needed.

AEW World Tag Champions, Hurt Syndicate are confronted by the returning Gunns! | 2/5/25 AEW Dynamite

Miss – The Gunns are back on AEW Dynamite

This felt weird, to be honest. This writer is a fan of The Gunns but the way their return was booked felt extremely underwhelming. Plus, they didn’t look like a threat to Lashley and Benjamin at all. AEW confirmed that The Gunns will challenge for the titles next week, and it seems like they’ll just be fodder for The Hurt Business.

Hit – Hounds of Hell vs. Fletcher & Takeshita

Buddy Matthews is one of AEW’s best-kept secrets. The match with Okada is going to be a banger. Speaking of Okada, the Rainmaker’s theme song distraction should’ve ended the match right away, but it continued, which was odd. Brody King is a tank. Fletcher and Takeshita work well together as a tag team. Let’s see if they get their hands on tag team titles somewhere down the line.

MJF & ROH World Tag Champion Dustin Rhodes have a war of words! | 2/5/25, AEW Dynamite

Miss – Dustin Rhodes & MJF segment on AEW Dynamite

They teased MJF vs. Hangman Page, only to set up Max versus Dustin Rhodes. It seems Tony wants MJF to work with the veterans on AEW Dynamite before a potential match with Page at AEW Revolution. The build to the latter potential match has been compelling, as Max and Page haven’t said a word to each other’s face. It’s a slow build-up to what has the potential to be AEW’s feud of the year.

Hit – Toni Storm plays Mariah May

This was brilliant. When you thought Toni Storm’s arc was done, she delivered yet again by playing Mariah May on AEW Dynamite. The AEW Women’s World Champion sold the angle well. Storm versus Aminata was solid, as Aminata delivered some stiff strikes. This writer is looking forward to the bout between May and Storm in Australia.

Miss – Another New York Minute segment on AEW Dynamite

Can’t they just get rid of this segment? Many critics have argued that Chris Jericho takes TV time from up-and-coming wrestlers. The Hobbs-Bill spot with security guys was the only good part of this entire segment.

Swerve Strickland & Ricochet FINALLY CLASH in a brutal battle! | 2/5/25, AEW Dynamite

Hit – Swerve Strickland vs. Ricochet

This was a great main event featuring two extremely talented wrestlers. Ricochet’s cheap shot set the tone of the match. Strickland’s powerbomb to Ricochet on the barricade looked like it broke his back. He didn’t sell the move throughout the match though. The finish was creative, and it implied that the feud between the pair is far from over.
